Rare Dogon ceremonial lidded drinking vessel

An extremely rare type of Dogon ceremonial lidded drinking vessel, used in the funeral rites of a Hogon (chief).
The iconography on the vessel relates to aspects of Dogon cosmology. The wood used was taken from particular trees at what were believed to be auspicious times, and the carving was undertaken by a master carver.
