A Mathura bone comb handle, the obverse with a fine carving in high relief of a seated yaksha (male earth spirit) holding bundles of plumes or fronds, flanked by two animals at bottom right and left; the reverse with incised dotted circle motif.

Kushan period, 1st-2nd century A.D. Mathura (Uttar Pradesh)

Dimensions:

3.5 x 5.8 cm

Condition:

The piece is fragmentary, with the tines of the comb broken away in antiquity; smooth, glossy patina.
