Description

A fine ancient North Indian zoomorphic oil lamp in Elephant form. The main body of the lamp in the form of a standing elephant with six oil lamps around the body, one fragmentary lamp on the head and one in the centre of the back. When we first acquired this piece we believed it to be votive, however after cleaning some of the build up, we discovered that some of the lamps appear to have been used. The entire body with remnant white ochre pigment decoration. A truly rare and fascinating piece from this region./
